Before the railroad arrived in 1873, only a handful of families lived in Petoskey. But by 1900, there were approximately 6,000 full time residents and 125,000 summer visitors. The New Arlington Hotel was larger and grander than Mackinac Island’s Grand Hotel and the rail stations handled over 100 trains and over 5000 passengers per day in the peak season.
This walking tour explains why and how the city grew while visiting historic sites from that time period. It lasts approximately 90 minutes and focuses on the city center (Pennsylvania Park, Lake Street, Mitchell Street, and Howard Street).
The cool air, fresh water and million dollar sunsets soon made Petoskey one of the nations premiere resort and shopping destinations.
